To Jessie, Our Sister, on her Birthday

by Monteen, October 1, 2001

If one has a drab piece of furniture that could be enhanced, or even a bare wall, Jessie would not be the least intimidated to improving it with her artistic endeavors. Give her a brush, some colors, a free hand, and presto....look what she has created!...a picture...a design...a landscape. Give her some yardage, perhaps a sheet and scissors and with her creative ingenuity she can create a lovely garment. She is a well of ideas and has the ability to display them.

Of course her home reflects her strong sense of design, plain, simple, elegant. She takes special pleasure in creating simple flower arrangements using natural elements of limbs, grasses, wood, flowers or rock. Who but Jessie would think of using curly-leafed willow branches to entwine over and around her bed...and it looks great!

With her candid opinions freely given on whatever the subject...religion...would affairs...education...health...current events, whatever, always expressing succinctly with perhaps a clever bit of innocuous humor, one finds her a most refreshing person.

She has accepted her disability, coming in later years, surely with dismay, but with grace and tranquility, even the use of cane and crutch and sometimes a small wheelchair.

In retrospect, looking back the 70 years, it seems Jessie slipped into our family without the slightest disruption, just a few more diapers to be washed, no big deal. She grew and blended in with Carol and Alan's play activities as she unconsciously observed and absorbed the values of our household, being loved and cherished by each of us.

201 McCord was a wonderful place for kids to live even though it was far from an elegant neighborhood. Our place was beautiful, in a rural sort of way with trees, flowers, the alfalfa field, the garden the nicely painted house and barn with white picketing, the livestock and bountiful food. Jessie and each of us, lived in a home brimming with the good life, created by Mother and Daddy. It was a busy, demanding life filled with duties and demands, but with books and more books, music, church, good relatives and friends, but no boredom as there was always something going on or about to happen.

And then there was Tim, an ever-present brother-in-law, a lover of people, and especially us, who loved to tease. He was instrumental in seeing that Alan and Jessie entered Redlands University. It was there that Jessie and Wayne found each other. On a bright, sunny day in May they were married in our beautiful church by Dr. Barrett, his last Poteete wedding.

As time went on, Paul, Philip, Peter and Teresa arrived. Because of Wayne's administrative work in education they lived in several different places, the most distant and probably the most interesting one was in North Africa, where they provided educational assistance to English-speaking families living there.

Our family wishes to express our deep gratitude and thanks (again) to Jessie and Wayne for their instigation and involvement in creating our extensive family history book and the DOLOP website which has been a source of pleasure and information for so many.

We are honored to have Jessie as a sister. Thank goodness she is here...a beautiful person, living her life beautifully, guided by the Holy Spirit and in tune with the Infinite.
