1 William Lowery POTEETE. Born on 7 Sep 1887 in Union County, Georgia. William
Lowery died in Bakersfield, Kern County, California, on 1 Jan 1974; he was 86.
Buried on 4 Jan 1974 in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Bakersfield, California. Cause
of death: Heart Failure. Occupation: Oil Company Worker. Religion: Baptist.
William Lowery (he used the name Lowery)
was the second of nine children born to James Allen Poteete and Martha
Davenport. He was born in Union County,
Georgia and was here that he met and married Opla Teresa Chapman in 1914.
They were married by a Justice of the Peace in a horse-drawn buggy, beside a
river. Lowery and Opla began their marriage in a two-room log cabin on the
family farm. Their first child, Monteen, was born here.
After the birth of Monteen they moved to California
where Lowery was employed by the Sounthern Pacific Railroad. They were later
sent to Kerman where Reinette was born. Later Lowery was transferred to Taft
where Max was born and the family lived in a little railroad box car, with
added rooms, which had been converted into living quarters, because housing was
scarce. During World War I Lowery held two jobs, one in a warehouse and the
other as a night watchman for the railroad.
Lowery eventually went to work for the
Standard Oil Company and over the years other children were born. He was later
transferred to Bakersfield and they bought four acres with an old house on
McCord Avenue for $2,500. Lowery improved the house as time went by, and
eventually the number of children increased to 10.
Following retirement from Standard Oil,
Lowery and Opla sold their place on McCord and moved to Grass Valley where they
lived out their years.
W. L. Poteete (1887-1974)
by Max W. Poteete
Handsome in countenance, narrow face,
pleasantly strong chin, grey eyes and brownish wavy hair until his early 50's.
Wiry in build, maybe 5'9" tall, 140 pounds plus or minus during his life.
His formal education -- to the 4th grade --
marginal but likely on a par with his peers that he grew up with. He was an opinionated man. His Bible was marked extensively and
the pages were well thumbed. His
favorite preachers were the Hell Fire and Brimstone School. Daddy had the common biases and
prejudices that can frequently be found in people who have had a limited formal
education. For instance, even
though on T.V. he saw the astronauts walking on the moon, he said that it
really didn't happen.
He found Destiny Magazine , the house
organ of British Israel, to be very credulous, but he could not convince Opla
of it in any way.
Sentiment and emotion were difficult for
him to handle, caused this eyes to glisten and his lips to quiver. A defense
for this was a sometimes gruffness or abruptness, that could be "off
putting".

It is not known when or with whom Edward
Hyatt came to western North Carolina.
He was in the Battle of King's Mountain on the 7th of October,
1780. It is told in the family
that he brought the first wagon over the Blue Ridge Mountains in that
vicinity. That was when he was
moving his family from Morgonton to Burke County (now Haywood County). To go down some mountains he would cut
down a small tree and fasten it to the back of the wagon as a drag to keep the
wagon from overrunning the team.
He build a cabin and with other men helped organize and build the first
church in what is now Haywood County.
It was a log structure, the Maple Grove Baptist Church.
The area was on the very frontier of
settlement. It was Cherokee Indian
land. Edward took pains to be on
good terms with the Indians.
On June 8, 1975, the Daughters of the
American Revolution sponsored the dedication of a memorial stone on Edward's

Arjalon died in Orange County, Virginia, in 1773; he was 71. Buried in On His

Arjalon and Joyce had 7 children.
Guy Davenport provided a photograph of the
house Arjalon and Joyce lived in.
The house has been preserved and is in the James Madison Museum in
Orange, Orange County, Virginia.
It is the age and architecture that earned its preservation; not that
Arjalon Price lived in it. The
house was built in 1733 and is 16 x 16 with a loft, a common design of the
time. This one was added on to
over the years and built over so that it was buried in a much larger frame
house. Guy was not sure, but
thinks that the ground floor was one room only. There would almost certainly be a separate kitchen building
and probably a milk house and a smokehouse for meat. The interior is of plaster over wooden lathe. There is a stairway leading to the loft
which probably contained two bedrooms for children. All other living would have been in the large ground floor
room. Guy was surprised that the
house was of sawn lumber instead of a log house. There must have been a sawmill nearby.

was fought over repeatedly in the religious wars of the 16th and 17th
centuries. When William Penn
invited the Protestants to settle in Pennsylvania, large numbers of them took
up on his offer of free land.
There were the Pennsylvania Dutch who still exist in considerable
numbers in central Pennsylvania today.
Peter Hunsucker was one of them. He and Anna and their family arrived in
Philadelphia October 28, 1738 on the ship "Bilander Thistle" and then
settled in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Not all of these Dutch stayed in Pennsylvania. Many moved down into Virginia or points

1232 John GATER I. Born bef 1600 in England. John died ? in ? Occupation: Employee Of Virginia
Company.
In a 1624 Virginia census John was living
at James City and with the Corporation.
Guy Davenport assumes that this the corporation was the Virginia Company
and that they were his employer.
The following year he was on Mulberry Island, probably still employed in
the Virginia Company. He
told the census taker he arrived in Virginia in 1620 on the ship
"George".
In July 1635, the ship
"Assurance" sailed from London with about 200 passengers bound for
Virginia. On the passenger list
was John Gater, age 36, Joan Gater, Age 23 and John Gater, age 15. It appears that John Gater in 1620 left
a bride behind in England when he first went to Virginia. When he returned years later, she had
apparently died, but a son remained.
He then married Joan.
